Restaurant Transformation with Custom Lighting: Case Study of Yes Chef SCBD Jakarta

Tim Linevolt·February 20, 2026·8 minutes read

How can custom LED strip lighting enhance the dining experience and encourage social media engagement? Real case study of the Yes Chef project in SCBD Jakarta by Linevolt.

Light Is Not Just Lighting

In the modern F&B industry, lighting is no longer just a function — it is an element of branding and experience. Research shows that 70% of restaurant guests consider lighting when choosing a venue for their Instagram Story. In the era of digital content, restaurants that are IG-able get free word-of-mouth.

This is not a theory. This is the real data that drove Yes Chef's decision to invest a significant budget in custom lighting before their grand opening at SCBD, Jakarta.

About the Yes Chef Project

Client: Yes Chef Restaurant

Location: SCBD, South Jakarta

Concept: Fine casual dining with a modern industrial touch

Challenge: Creating a different ambiance in each zone (bar, main dining, private room) but still cohesive as one brand experience.

Consultation and Design Process

Discovery Sessions

Timlinevolt started with a 3 hour discovery session with the owner and interior designer Yes Chef. We learn:

  • Brand personality: Contemporary, confident, slightly edgy
  • Target customer: Urban professionals 25-40 years old, high social media activity
  • Operations: Different from regular restaurants, Yes Chef operates from lunch to late night — meaning the lighting must be adaptable
  • Constraint: Exposed concrete ceiling (industrial aesthetic), cannot create new holes
  • Lighting Concept

We propose a 3-Layer Dynamic Lighting concept:

Layer 1 — Task Lighting: Functional lighting for work areas (open kitchen, bar counter). Uses CRI 95+ LED strip for accurate food rendering.

Layer 2 — Ambient Lighting: Addressable LED behind acoustic panels and ceiling beams. Can be programmed to change from warm gold (lunch) to deep amber (dinner) to moody blue-purple (late night).

Layer 3 — Accent & Feature: LED highlights on artwork, plants, and architectural elements. This is what creates Instagram moments.

    Technical Implementation

    Bar Zone

  • Under-bar LED: SK6812 RGBW under the counter bar, producing an iconic glow
  • Back-bar: Addressable LED behind the bottle rack, color can be customized per collection
  • Counter edge: Milky diffuser channel for soft, non-glaring light
  • Main Dining Area

  • Ceiling cove: 47 meters of WS2815 LED strip (dual data line for reliability) inside the ceiling cove
  • Table pendant: Not from Linevolt, but we coordinate the color temperature so that it is harmonious
  • Wall wash: LED strip behind wood paneling for dramatic depth of texture
  • Private Rooms

  • Fully programmable: Clients can customize lighting for birthdays, anniversaries or corporate events
  • Scene presets: 8 saved scene presets, can be called up via the tablet at the reception desk
  • Results and Impact

    Immediate Response

In the first week after opening, several things happened spontaneously:

  • Guests naturally choose certain angles for photos — just as we designed
  • Yes Chef Stories and Reels started to go viral without paid promotion
  • Online reviews mostly mention "ambiance" as a highlight
  • Operational Benefits

  • With dimming and color scenes, Yes Chef can transition from lunch to dinner without physical adjustments — saving 15-20 minutes of setup time per shift
  • "High Noon" (lunch) scene: 4000K, 85% brightness, energetic
  • "Golden Hour" (dinner) scene: 2700K, 70% brightness, warm and intimate
  • "After Dark" (late night) scene: 3000K + subtle accent colors, moody
  • Learnings and Recommendations for Restaurants

    Budget Allocation

For mid-to-premium class restaurants, the ideal allocation for lighting:

  • 15-20% of total interior budget for new venue
  • Minimum IDR 5 million/m² for dining area (including consultation, materials and installation)
  • Quick Guide

  • Don't cut the lighting budget for tableware — guests take photos of the atmosphere, not the plates
  • Plan kitchen lighting separately — CRI and brightness needs are very different
  • Invest in dimmable systems — operational flexibility is worth it in the long term
  • Create 1 'hero spot' — one visual element that is very Instagram-able
  • Test with a phone camera at night — this is the worst condition that must be handled well
